Mr Modi and his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party are expected to return to power for the third time in a row, riding on an alarming centralisation of power, and an increasingly institutionalised practice of bare-knuckle majoritarianism that goes by the name of ‘Hindutva’. Popular cinema is seen to have become a bedfellow to this aspiration.

The regularity of their appearance, and their unmissable scheduling and template have provoked a couple of observations in the global media.

There is a tendency among some of us to demand loyalty from the Muslims in India and to condemn tendencies amongst them which may be pro-Pakistan. Such tendencies, of course, are wrong and have to be condemned. But I think it is wrong to lay stress always on the loyalty on behalf of the Muslims of India. Loyalty is not produced to order or by fear. It comes as a natural growth from circumstances which make loyalty not only a sentiment which appeals to one but also profitable in the long run. Amanda Tyler, the executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and the lead organizer of the Christians Against Christian Nationalism campaign, has studied the roots of Christian nationalism. Tyler joins Reality Check's John Avlon to discuss how Christian nationalism is used as a political ideology to merge one's faith with partisan politics.

The nature of communal virus plaguing India even in this era displays political “strategies” still being deliberately manufactured and propagated to spread communalism at cost of secularism. The saving grace lies in questions being raised from secular activists, politicians and certain sections of media criticizing such communal moves. Sadly, some right-winged extremists bear little remorse about spreading communal virus. Paradoxically, several factors including religion, caste, lineage, nationality- none of which decides identity, including gender, of anyone prior to his/her birth, appear to play a major role in deciding whether abuse of “weaker” sections is justified. In category of “weaker” sections referred to here, it would not be erroneous to place those whose “abuse” is not considered a “crime” at various levels. Little concern is displayed for whether humane values and democracy permit these or not. Or whether this is equivalent to justifying such abuses and literally recognizing perpetuators of the same as great heroes.What else can be said about release of 11 persons, earlier sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of gang-rape and murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family during the 2002-Gujarat carnage? They had been earlier convicted by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Mumbai on January 21, 2002. The charges were later upheld by Bombay High Court.
